- Get the team together
-
- Think about the culture. Is a meeting the best method, or a walk around the workplace, or an informal get-together over some food and drink?
- Set the scene
-
- Describe the reason for the get-together. E.g.
"We want to review the safety of the work place and identify potential hazards. This is best done with the experts. That's you, team!"
If there is a particular focus (such as manual handling, or plant and machinery for example) make that clear now.
- Describe the process - (i.e. this strategy)
- Set some ground rules about respect for each other and commitment to active listening.
- Talk about the likely outcomes - e.g. we expect to identify risks in the workplace, prioritise them and deal with them together. If there are limits such as time or money
constraints, be open about these.
- Provide background information and data, which may include such things as;
-
- Why there is a felt need for this process. Was it prompted by an incident or injury or an increase in incidents and injuries overall? Has a worksite inspection or other audit
activity highlighted problem areas? Is there new research available on relevant topics?
- What are the relevant legislative and policy drivers? How are we performing against them?
- Reaffirm desired outcomes.
