The profile of OHS is often not prominent in the workplace. The health and safety of employees is one of those things that is easy to "put in boxes" - i.e.;
- it may be a semi-regular item on staff meeting agendas
- employees see (and sometimes take part in annual worksite inspections)
- OHS "belongs" to someone with that word in their position title
Day to day awareness about safety is hard to develop and maintain for management as well as employees. Scheduled activities and serious injury are sometimes the prompt for deeper
discussion about OHS.
This article does not purport to be a comprehensive solution to the issue of employee engagement in OHS. What it does seek to do is provide one simple strategy by which employee
groups can have a visible impact on their safety in the workplace. Knowing that their input makes a difference helps to sustain commitment in the longer term.
The Strategy
The strategy is simple, but "tweak" it to be a good fit for the culture of your workplace. Get the best balance you can between information input and "hands-on" activity.
